Registered Maine Guide

It's great to see so much interest from people in wanting to become a Registered Maine Guide and train with us this year. We offer two types of guide training programs at Northeast Guide Service - Registered Maine Guide in Recreation and Registered Maine Guide in Whitewater.
Let me tell you a little about both of the licenses, what it takes to participate in our courses, and the opportunities once the license is achieved.

A Recreational Maine Guide License allows you to lead outdoor trips in canoeing, kayaking, snowshoeing, hiking, biking, snowmobiling, ATV, and other day and overnight trips in the State of Maine. Learn and perfect all you need to know to successfully pass the State-administered test, including map & compass, lost person, watercraft laws, trip planning, safety, risk management, camping, outdoor cooking, rules and regulations, canoeing skills, the business side of guiding, and much more.

This is a 3-Day class, offered in April and in October, open to the public to sign on for this program. Once you take the course, you will submit your application to the State of Maine to take the oral and written exam. Once you pass and become a Registered Maine Recreation Guide, you will have the opportunity to work for yourself and work for many outfitters in the State of Maine.

Northeast Guide Service is looking for Recreational Maine Guide's to lead canoeing, kayaking, overnight trips in Maine this season.

Our Registered Maine Whitewater Rafting Guide Training is the best in the state, structured around the instruction of technical strokes, maneuvers, river knowledge, river safety and group leadership achieved through on-the-water whitewater skills, which prepares you better than any other guide training program to pass the State of Maine written exam. Our Registered Maine Guide Trainer’s will help you gain the confidence you need to earn the title of Registered Maine Whitewater Rafting Guide.

This is an 8-Day course offered at the end of May. There is no oral exam to become a whitewater rafting guide in Maine. There is a written exam. Once you pass the written exam, you are eligible for employment as a Maine whitewater rafting guide in the State of Maine.

Northeast Whitewater is looking for full time and part time Maine white water guides.

Oh, and did I mention that once you have gone through both trainings, pass your tests and become licensed as a Maine Guide, that you are lucky enough to work in the great outdoors! You become part of a special network of people, known as Maine guide's and it's the best summer job you could ever ask for!

New Year, New Things

Once we get through the hussle and bussle of the Christmas season, there's not much time to think about...a New Year. But, here we are again. Man, time flies (when you are having fun, they say). 2011 was an exciting and eventful year.
Northeast Guide Service was fortunate enough to start the 2011 season in a new building, which is a great location, overlooking Moosehead Lake in Greenville, Maine.
There were lows: our whitewater guide training was sparce to say the least and we didn't have the selection of trained whitewater guide's that we would have hoped for.
The up side to that (there is always an up side in my world) is Jared, Brian, Dan and Moisoff faithfully returned to continue being the great employees Northeast Guide Service is so thankful to have. They are experienced, confident Maine Guide's that are friendly to be around and lead professional and fun trips.
There were highs: I was able to work for Northeast Guide Service full time, rather than part time on weekends, like I had in the past. I love it here!
Did I mention we have an awesome location?!?!?
We met great people along the way.
We rafted every day in July and August and it was hot and sunny!!!
We saw tons of moose.
We camped.
We hiked.
We kayaked and canoed.
We got to live and enjoy the great Maine outdoors!!
Now, time to look ahead to 2012. There is so much to look forward to, but that will be announced over time. For today, though, we are working hard on updating our websites and they really are informative and beautiful. I'm putting together a Northeast Guide Service vacation planner that will be out the first of February and I simply can't wait to share. We are actively pursuing staff for the 2012 season, so if you know anyone that is up for the best summer job in beautiful northern Maine, send them our way.

Become a Maine Whitewater Raft Guide with Northeast Whitewater Rafting!

It's December. There is crunchy, icy snow on the ground in Greenville. Moosehead Lake is beginning its deep freeze. Christmas lights have lit up the town. So, you ask, why am I thinking about whitewater? I love the river. Today, I even went through my river gear. J hooked me up with some river wear hand me downs and I am thinking about whitewater raft guide training and another season of rafting in Maine. Call me crazy, but I love it.

River people are a special kind of people. Not just anyone can be one of us. That is why we are looking for the right people to join our team and become a whitewater raft guide in Maine this spring and summer. River people live and breathe this job. River people work as raft guides in Maine for the love of the river. River people are fulfilled by the connections we make with our fellow raft guides and the guests we guide down the rivers in Maine.

We have started to hear from some prospective whitewater raft guide applicants with interest in working for Northeast Whitewater next season, but are interested to hear from more potential Maine guide candidates. The seasonal positions we are looking to fulfill in addition to whitewater raft guide include:

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...

This week started with rain and has ended with significant snowfall. Everything is snow covered and beautiful. It looks like we will have a White Christmas in Maine this year.
It's always nice to hear from the Northeast Guide Service staff during the Holidays. Each one of us goes our separate ways during the winter months and then tend to reconnect in the spring for outdoor education and gearing up for whitewater rafting.
Jared tells me that he's training for a single day bike ride across Florida (170 miles in April) the longest single day ride in America. He recently ran a half-marathon on Thanksgiving morning (it was a warm day). Jared also only has 4 more courses until he gets his MBA (so close). As if Jared hasn't been doing enough, since I saw him last, but I'd be lying...he made 2 news stations for hurricane kayaking in Florida!
Josh tells me he is working at Saddleback Mountain again this year and is ready for the snow to fall, so he can hunker down and enjoy it.
Joanie and Chris and little Ripley will be going out and cutting down their own Christmas tree in the woods this year...which she hasn't done since she was a little kid. This is such a nice way to begin her own tradition with her young family.
Brittany has been keeping busy between school and work. Brittany goes to school for Radiology and works for Northeast Guide Service taking guests reservations in the summer. She had a wonderful Thanksgiving and is looking forward to being home (which is Greenville), at Christmas to spend time with family and friends.
Chuck tells me I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel, when I come asking him what he is up to. Chuckles always makes us all chuckle at his sarcastic wit! Chuck tells me he had been looking for some new places to see some moose in his neck of the woods and found some nice ponds. Chuck has a great camp and since the weather is getting colder, it's about time to close up for the year. This part of our conversation made me laugh, but I can feel his pain, too. In Chuck's words, "took my cell phone for a walk through a bog. Turned out the bog was deeper than my pants pocket and I lost all my numbers."
As for us (and the dogs of course), we are ready to play in the snow!
As I hear from the gang, I'll let you all know how their doing and what they are up to, until the next season of whitewater rafting in Maine and guided outdoor adventure begins!

Thanksgiving - Welcome the Holiday Season

Thanksgiving Day tends to be the kick off to the holiday season, with lights, tree decorating, shopping and feasting. At this time of year we are thankful for so much. We had our challenges this season with Hurricane Irene impacting the end of August and folks traveling to Maine in September. Even though Maine wasn't hit hard with stormy weather, the storm impacted vacation plans for many of our guests. We are thankful that we weathered the storm and learned some valuable lessons along the way.
Thanksgiving allows us to pause and give thanks for the people that are in our lives. Northeast Whitewater Rafting is thankful for our dedicated staff. Dan, Jared, Brian, Brittany, Jeremy, Jessica, Chuck, Moisoff, Josh and the entire moose crew help to make each day run smoothly. Whether it be driving the bus to and from the river safely with our guests, working in the office to help guests plan their Maine vacations, or guiding whitewater rapids on Canada Falls, the Kennebec river and Penobscot river...we are grateful for you!

Baseball Hall of Fame, Cooperstown

Since childhood J has wanted to go to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York and today we did just that! Many ball players dream of being a legend, this place is filled with history and I have a greater respect for the people of baseball and our nation as fans, since going to the Baseball Hall of Fame, thanks to J. I'm glad that my husband wanted to go there and that his opportunity to go there was now, with me. The game of baseball is a "national pastime." We saw favorites, like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Hank Aaron, and for me, anything to do with the Red Sox. I love that dirty water...
All young people have dreams and as adults, we encourage their dreams and tell them they can be and do anything they set their minds to. We've come to the end of our road trip and it is the end of our journey, at least this journey for now, and I've learned that our dreams really do come true. We can be what we dream of and do what we dream of, as long as we work hard, stay focused, and continue to be creative.

Asheville, North Carolina and beyond

We visited Asheville, North Carolina for the outdoor recreation of the area. It is surrounded by mountains and rivers for all outdoor enthusiasts. If you enjoy kayaking and rafting (as do we) or hiking and waterfalls (as do we), this is a wonderful place to enjoy, if you are not coming to Maine of course!
The city of Asheville reminds me of Portland, Maine, in many ways. Since J and I both went to college in Portland, it is a city that is dear to us. There is a lot of culture, diversity, great food, arts, and recreation, whether it be the ocean or mountains, they both seem to have it.
We splurged a bit and decided to enjoy an historic part of Asheville and that was the Biltmore Estate. George Vanderbilt officially opened the home to friends and family on Christmas Eve in 1895. He had created a country retreat where he could pursue his passion for art, literature, and horticulture. The gardens at the Biltmore Estate are simply amazing. For anyone that loves plants, gardening, and landscaping, this place is awesome. I hate to say it, but I can't even capture how amazing the gardens are, but of course, I tried.
Next steps in our journey are the Blue Ridge Parkway and Shenandoah Mountains. Wildlife and scenery, here we come!

Veteran's Day Nashville Style

Lucky for us, we headed to downtown Nashville just in time to catch the Veteran's Day parade. What an amazing and Patriotic experience for us. Fort Campbell is not far from here and they had a huge presence in the Nashville parade on Friday.

We walked Broadway for hours, going in and out of funky gift shops, listening to musicians play at local bars, had a local brew at the Nashville Brewery and grabbed some lunch, yes you guessed it...at Margaritaville! There were tons of bikers downtown and one that I couldn't pass up getting a picture of. His dogs cruise with him and man these dogs are super cool. We saw the General Jackson, Joe's Crab Shack, Hard Rock Cafe, just to name a few. Honestly, we've gotten some really cool ideas for our Northeast Guide Service gift shop, while being away on our vacation. It will be fun in the spring to decorate with new whitewater rafting and moose tour memorabilia.

Music City

After spending some relaxation time in the sunny south, we spent yesterday driving across the Florida pan handle, north through Alabama. Alabama is a beautiful state, with cotton fields, farm land and history. It was a sunny day for driving and we made our way to Nashville, TN last night to park the camper, play with the dogs and look forward to exploring Music City for a little while. There is so much to see and do here, I've got to get started on figuring out where to begin!

Jared and Jacksonville

We spent the afternoon exploring downtown Jacksonville. It's very different from many of the cities that we have visited in the U.S. First of all, over a million people live in Jacksonville, but that is in 758 square miles. That is a big and spread out area for one city. I figured the downtown would have shops and restaurants, but the downtown is comprised of some big buildings and businesses. What we learned was that there are many areas within Jacksonville, that all offer everything that a person needs to live, related to eating, working, and playing. You don't need to go to the downtown to get these things, instead they probably are all within reach wherever you stay in Jacksonville.
Jacksonville, though, felt like home away from home today. We had the pleasure of meeting up with Jared, one of our first employees. Jared drove to Maine to become a Registered Maine Guide with only 3 days to reach Maine before the 8 day class started. Since that time, Jared has worked for us every summer. He goes to graduate school in Jacksonville and was definitely surprised when we called to say hello and that we'd like to meet up for dinner. It's funny, we all spend every day together during the summer, working at Northeast Guide Service, leading trips. Then, the season comes to an end and we all go our separate ways. So, it was really cool to see Jared in his town and in our off season.
Jared picked an authentic Italian restaurant for us to enjoy and it was delicious...Casa Dora is the name and if you are in downtown Jacksonville, check it out! After catching up over dinner, we walked across the blue-ly lit up Acosta Bridge, talked and enjoyed the music playing in the San Marco area. Thanks Jared for a great time and we look forward to another season of whitewater rafting in the spring, after you enjoy sunny Florida this winter and we go back to snowy Maine.

Beer Tour

Days 5-7 of our road trip vacation have been lots of fun. Check out Maine moose tracks blog to find out about our day at the Jacksonville Zoo. Jacksonville, Florida is home to one of the Anheuser-Busch breweries. They offer complimentary tours, where you learn the history of Anheuser-Busch and also see the process of beer making. The facility is spotless, staff are extremely friendly and knowledgeable, the gift shop has some really cool stuff and there is a comfortable lounge, with big screen tv's showing beer commercials, while you enjoy great brews. J went with the more traditional tastes of beer, but I tried one that I had never had before...Wild Blue. It was like a bubbly wine beer...simply delicious! After your next whitewater rafting trip with Northeast Whitewater rafting, enjoy a nice cold brew, maybe your favorite Anheuser-Busch beverage, while watching your days rafting video with us!

So, J and I have been traveling since Monday with Abby and Manny (our faithful dogs). It's been an eventful road trip thus far. We left snow in the Northeast. We've seen the northeastern shore, traveled in Virginia, across the Chessapeake Bay bridge, through North and South Carolina and are now on the border of Georgia and Florida, just outside of Jacksonville and it's much warmer here. We've found a lovely campground to park our camper and relax for the next week or so. Most people think it must be so easy to relax, but J and I find it hard. We work steadily from January until the end of October. The winter months are spent working in the office, marketing, talking to people and trying to get people to come to Maine for their summer vacation. It's hard to change gears and have it be our turn, but here we are and I'm sure before the vacation ends, we will feel relaxed to some degree and then have to get working again. But, until then, I need to enjoy my summer, (in November), out of the state of Maine. So, here I am, with my feet up, dogs on my side, listening to the crickets, enjoying the stars and the warmth because it's my turn to have a little vacation away. We plan to have no plans and it's interesting that way, but will help to keep it mellow. I'll keep you posted on our relaxation efforts and our journey to get there from here.

Fall New England Tours

I can honestly say that I will never forget the first time that I went whitewater rafting in Maine during September. Whitewater rafting is one of the best fall New England tours that I can ever remember. Simply put, it's spectacular! My friend at the time, invited me on a high water release whitewater rafting trip in Maine. The drive to the river was one of the most beautiful fall foliage drives I have had the pleasure of experiencing. The forest was brilliantly landscaped with fall colors of red, orange, yellow and green rolling throughout the hillside.
I now am a Registered Maine Whitewater Raft Guide and I love Maine rivers and whitewater rafting. It is an awesome experience no matter what time of year you decide to go white water rafting in Maine, but in September, the tree leaves become a colorful fall painting and the landscape that surrounds you during the river rafting trip is breathtaking. Overnight Whitewater Rafting and Kayaking Trips in Maine

Hurricane Irene and Whitewater Rafting with Northeast Whitewater

Whitewater rafting today on the Kennebec River: August 28, 2011 - Northeast Whitewater Rafting conquered Hurricane Irene today on the Kennebec River in Maine. The water level was higher than the normal 5000 cfs flow, up a bit at 7200 cfs for amazing big whitewater rafting fun. Our rafting trip guests were dropping like flies over the last 2 days in preparation of the big storm, but Hurricane Irene didn't get us down. Today, ended up being a special private rafting trip for a father and two sons. Danimal and Josh were the guide's, which I can't think of two better guide's to pair up with these three adventure seeking guests. Danimal ran Maytag, which is a monster hit at this water level and the threesome thought it was simply amazing. Hurricane Irene may have pounded us with rain today, but this group was thrilled to get to experience Maine whitewater rafting on a day that so many people stayed home on their couches, out of the rain. Our guests enjoyed swimming in the lower river of the Kennebec, with water temps of 68 degrees, it was warmer than the air today and a great way to ride the lower river to take out. Thanks to the Fitts party for making today a memorable one for Northeast Whitewater, Dan, Josh and Gary. See you next year!

River Rafting

Some of the best spots for river rafting are right here in Maine! With 5 rivers to choose from, there's a perfect trip for you whether your an experienced rafter or not! The Kennebec is the perfect river for first time rafters and families with young kids! Today We went out with 2 "soul sistas" and their 5 daughters, 2 girls from Boston, 2 guys and 1 child, and 2 women from Florida! Riding on the huge, rollercoaster waves and splashes was a great way to get out of the heat of summer! It was a beautiful day and perfect for a river swim. We even got to see a bald eagle in the lower section! We hope that everyone had a great time and we can't wait to see them again next year!

We had grandparents on vacation with their granddaughter, brother, and sister. We went down the Kennebec and enjoyed the huge waves and big cool splashes! It felt like a rollercoaster ride-what a blast! We took a break from the rafting and ate steak, chicken, fried rice, ice tea, and brownies on the side of the river. It was a good day for swimming and we even took a dip in the water! We hope that everyone had a great time, and that we get to see them again soon!

Huge rolling waves and great big splashes in the III and IV class sections. We spotted an eagle from the raft, and the landscape was beautiful all around the river. The weather was a little crazy and we got a little bit of everything (even some grape sized hail!)! The steak and chicken lunch was delicious-the perfect way to take a break from the excitement.

The most fun I've had all summer has been on the Kennebec River and the Penobscot River. Kennebec's class III-IV rapids are huge rolling waves, that lifted me off my seat. I had a smile across my face the entire time we were paddling through the waves and rapids that made me feel like I was on an amusement ride. It was just great fun, and I never felt scared, even though Magic Falls, the gnarliest feature on the Kennebec River trip was certainly a massive bouncing splash ride all the way down to the bottom of the falls. A fun high intensity ride, that paid off soon after when we took out for a big healthy hot lunch that the guides cooked for us right on the plush green banks of the river itself. We had a fire and grilled steaks, and we all had our fill of brownies, too. The rest of the trip let us enjoy the scenery around us, and we saw an osprey and an eagle.

The Penobscot River was the most intense ride of my life! We hit the gorge's class V rapid, the Exterminator! WOW! What a huge pushy rapid! All the features in the gorge were rapid fire, and I was so focused on my paddling, that the thought of getting bounced or sucked out of the raft by the Penobscot's crashing waters left me. The next set of features is called the Cribworks! It looked SCARY! But it was the most fun part of the day to me! We avoided the rocks sticking out of the water, and slid smoothly down a drop at the end that felt like a log ride! It was Awesome! Looking back up river at it was like, " Woah, did we just do that?!"

First Rafting Trip of the Season

Our first whitewater rafting trip of the season was this week and what an interesting trip it was! This trip was a college trip, set up as an overnight rafting trip. As the week approached, we knew that camping in tents was not going to be a reality. Maine was pounded with snow this season and it is still on the ground here in the Moosehead Lake region. So, we opted for warm cabins and what a good decision that was! Thursday, it snowed on the Kennebec River trip. Yes, snow. Pictured here is the Kennebec River put-in at Harris Station and the stairs are covered with snow. At times, the guide's claimed to be in a whitewater rafting blizzard. What an experience! After the rafting trip, all were happy to get out of their wet gear, put on warm clothes, while the guide's cooked hot meals and filled the students bellies. Day two of rafting, ironically, it was 50 degrees, sunny and beautiful. Talk about interesting and crazy weather. Everyone came back to Northeast Guide Service basecamp with sunny red faces and big smiles. They laughed as they watched the slideshow pictures of the day. I couldn't believe that they actually swam, willingly in Swimmer's rapid. The water temperature isn't even 40 degrees at this time of year. Eight future Registered Maine Guides completed the 3-day program last night and are now applying to take the State-administered test. Today there is a scheduled big water release on the Kennebec River and we're running our biggest commercial trip of the year so far with 48 guests! Guide Training Update!

Whitewater guide training is over halfway complete, and our guide trainees are tired and sore, but hanging in there! Our rigorous 8-day program is designed to produce the best guides in the industry, and we have high hopes for this year's crew. We had a commercial Kennebec River trip yesterday, which gave the guide trainees a chance to meet potential customers and the guests a chance to see a different side of our company. We ran the upper section of the Kennebec twice yesterday in what we call a "Double Trouble" run. It was a great day for everybody. The sun was shining, faces were smiling, and the rapids were rumbling. We also ran a moose safari last night. Boy have the moose been abundant in the Moosehead Lake region lately! All in all, this is shaping up to be a terrific summer!

Northeast Guide Service has had a very eventful Memorial Day Weekend! Our Whitewater Guide Training started this weekend. The guide trainees are learning a lot from our trainers. To become a whitewater guide, our trainees have to complete an in-depth 8 day river training and pass the State of Maine administered test. Monday, our entire whitewater staff participated in our guide training program. We rafted, whitewater kayaked and duckied the upper Kennebec River gorge, multiple times. It was a beautiful day to be on the water and with out a doubt, a lot of fun! Are you interested in becoming a Maine Guide? Beautiful Weather in Greenville

It may not officially be summer until June 21st, but the weather we're having would suggest that it's already time for sunshine, shorts, and summertime fun! We're having beautiful weather here in the Greenville, Maine area. Some of our guides are out on the Kennebec River whitewater rafting today, while others are at the basecamp teaching a Swiftwater Rescue Course. Yet another is down south in Waterville, Maine giving a presentation. You'd think we'd all take the day off on account of the gorgeous weather, but we're happy working because we have the best job in the world! We get to plan your vacation as well as participate in it, so for us it's like being on vacation every day.

What a spectacular day! We guided a couple from St Louis out into our secret Moose watching ponds, and we visited with 4 of the local animals. And on our way home, we caught a beautiful sunset over Moosehead Lake, facing Big Moose Mountain.

Off to a Running Start!

Northeast Guide Service is officially open for business in our Greenville, Maine location! The last signs were painted yesterday and will be up soon. After weeks of hard work, the base is finally finished, and it looks great! Good thing, too, because we're off to a busy start. We're teaching Swiftwater Rescue courses all week, as well as guiding Moose Safaris and a Kennebec whitewater rafting trip! Whitewater Guide Training starts a week from today, as well, and June is filling up fast with trips. We can't wait to see what this summer holds. With the beautiful weather we've been having here in Greenville and the abundance of moose, one thing is for sure: we're going to be guiding A LOT of trips this summer. And we wouldn't have it any other way!

Finishing up the base!

The staff here at Northeast Guide Service has been hard at work the past week renovating our base camp! Today our "Open" sign went out and we're working on the finishing touches: hanging freshly painted signs, putting the T.V.'s up, and, of course, painting our yellow moose. Just yesterday we constructed two moose out of plywood and today we're painting them. Keep a lookout when you ride down Pritham Avenue in Greenville, Maine, for our big yellow moose! Oh and speaking of moose, the moose watching in the Moosehead Lake area has been unbelievable recently!
